Ben F. Mitchell., 83, passed away Feb. 23, 2014, at his home in Chiloquin, OR.
Ben was born Nov. 2, 1930, at Klamath Agency to Ben Faye Mitchell and Bessie Eades Mitchell. He was the great-grandson of Chief Shapasheni (Sheepy Sheepkiller).
He spent his early childhood on the family ranch a Whisky Creek, Ore. He later worked for the Klamath Tribes Roads & Forestry Department. Even later in life, he worked doing body and fender work and upholstery work.
After retiring, Ben dedicated his life to volunteering to help Native Americans in the State Corretional System. He also was a member of the Klamath Tribes Cultural Heritage Committee.
Ben was an enrolled member of the Klamath Tribes and was of Modoc and Pit River decent. Survivors include his son, Ben and Kathleen Mitchell of Klamath Falls; daughter, Gwen and Emerson Smith of Warm Springs, Ore., son, Jeff and Kathleen Mitchell of Chiloquin; daughter Gale Mitchell and Mike Montagner of Beaverton, Ore.; son, Marc and Robin Mitchell of LaGrande, Ore.; daughter, Summer White Shirt of Vancouver, Wash.; sister, Sylvia Sharleen Undewood of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Mitchell; son Bryan Mitchell; sisters, Fayette Mitchell, Marilyn Hall, Delori Lolly Jack and Vera Mitchell; and brother Edward Isom Mitchell.
