Steiger Butte Singers and Drummers:
The Steiger Butte Singers are from Chiloquin, Oregon and are made up of several members of the Klamath Tribes and other tribes in the Pacific Northwest.
They are both spiritually and culturally connected to Crater Lake, as it is within their aboriginal tribal homeland. To them, Crater Lake National Park, known as giiwas in their language, means – A Sacred and Spiritual Place. It is where gmok’am’c (The Creator of all) came and battled the Chief of the Below World and saved the people from evil. This place is sacred, it is a place of great power and healing and should be respected as such.
The name, Steiger Butte, originates from a vision quest mountain/butte in the Klamath basin of Oregon, near Chiloquin. The Steiger Butte Singers and drummers have been in existence for more than 3 generations. This drum has always been a family drum that has traveled the United States and the Pacific Northwest. Now in their third generation of singers, the Steiger Butte drum is comprised of fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunties, nephews and nieces, who are a Northern style drum.
They was chosen for this musical piece, not only for their tribal connection to their homelands, but for their drumming and singing talents that have been appreciated for decades. They have also performed at the Britt Festival, and for the Crater Lake- Mirror of Heaven– documentary.
This weekend in San Francisco, they will be performing live at the Film Festival with 10 of their singers and drummers:
* Bill Jackson I: Drum Keeper/Singer
* Joyce Jackson: Singer/Drummer
* Jacqueline Wilson: Lead Singer/Drummer
* Samuel Wilson: Lead Singer/Drummer
* Billy Larson Jackson Jr.: Singer/Drummer
* Joel Jackson: Singer/Drummer
* Jessica Jackson: Singer/Drummer
The Steiger Butte Singers and Drummers are honored to not only represent our family, tribes, and friends, we are honored to share our culture and music with the world. It is up to us to share the gifts Creator has given us.
The original score, was commissioned by the Britt Music & Arts Festival in honor of the centennial of America’s National Park Service, was performed by a diverse ensemble that included the Britt Orchestra, regional choristers, brass and percussion, and Klamath Tribal Singers and drum group – The Steiger Butte Singers, conducted by Britt Orchestra Music Director Teddy Abrams on the rim of Crater Lake in 2016.
Focusing on the dynamic interaction between this extraordinary musical experience and the spectacular setting, the documentary artfully portrays the sound, vision, and spirit of this once-in-a-lifetime event.
