CHILOQUIN, Ore. – The Klamath Tribes Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Committee will bring families and community members together Sept. 24 to remember and honor loved ones whose lives have been lost to violence.
The National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims gathering will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Klamath Tribes Administration Auditorium, 501 Chiloquin Blvd. in Chiloquin.
The gathering will provide an opportunity for families and community members to remember those who have been lost, honor their lives and recognize the lasting impact violence has on families and communities.
The Klamath Tribes gathering is being held one day before the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, observed nationally each year on Sept. 25.
The observance grew from the work of Robert and Charlotte Hullinger, who founded the National Organization of Parents of Murdered Children following the 1978 murder of their 19-year-old daughter, Lisa Hullinger. The organization established an annual National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims in 1999 and selected Sept. 25, the anniversary of Lisa’s death, as the day of observance.
Congress formally recognized Sept. 25 as the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims in 2007. The observance was established to honor the memories of people lost to murder and recognize the impact of homicide on surviving family members and loved ones.
For the Klamath Tribes MMIP Committee, the local gathering carries that remembrance into the community through the message toq’ gil?ank, “stop the violence.”

Community members are invited to join the MMIP Committee from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 24 at the Klamath Tribes Administration Auditorium.
