Reading Progress:

Call for Artists

Save History and the Yakama Nation are seeking up to five Indigenous artists with a preference for artists from the Yakama Nation and Pacific Northwest Tribes (must be U.S. citizens) to illustrate a Children’s Activity Book. The book will be shared on SaveHistory.org, in print, and on Save History social media channels.

The Project

Our team will be recreating our Save Indigenous History Children’s Activity Book to include art, imagery, and values of the Yakama Nation and Pacific Northwest Tribes. The Children’s Activity Book will teach children about respectful visitation of archaeological sites and will include reading and writing activities, word searches, drawing and coloring pages, and other activities. The selected group of artists will be responsible for illustrating a total of ten activities (black and white line drawings) and the book’s cover (full color).

What is Save History?

Save History is a collaborative effort by Tribal organizations, archaeologists, federal and Tribal law enforcement, and supporters dedicated to ending the theft and destruction of archaeological resources on Tribal and public lands. We share stories from Indigenous people on how looting and vandalism of heritage sites impacts their communities. Through outreach and education about the harms and consequences of archaeological resource crime, it is our hope that cultural landscapes will be respected and protected.

Commitment

Each artist will collaboratively work with the Save History team and Yakama Nation staff to illustrate one or two full-page images. Illustrations can be drawn digitally or by hand using the artist’s preferred medium, but the final project must be digitized. This project can be done remotely, but the artist will need internet access in order to meet virtually with Save History and Yakama Nation staff. The Save History team includes archaeologists and a graphic designer available to assist with technical questions. The deadline for completed illustrations is March 14, 2025.

Compensation

The budget is $500 per illustration to be paid at the completion of the project. For example, if you are responsible for two images, you will receive payment of $1000.

To Apply

Please email a one-page cover letter stating your interest in the project and discuss your connection to your Indigenous community/ies, as well as a portfolio of your work (up to 10 images) to hello@savehistory.org. We strongly encourage Indigenous applicants to apply. The deadline for the application is end of day January 31, 2025.
