Word of the Day

Today we are going to examine 9 verbal suffixes. When we attach a verbal suffix, it changes the meaning of the verb.

In my demonstration sentence (ni yayna sle-a) we will see the changes that occur.

ni yayna sle-at. I can see the mountain.

ni yayna slewapka. I will see the mountain.

ni yayna sle-opka. I want to see the mountain.

ni yayna sle-atki. I should see the mountain.

yayna sle-ok, ni cis gena. Because of seeing the mountain, I went home.

yayna sle-ota, ni cis gena. While seeing the mountain, I went home.

yayna sle-ank, ni cis gena. After seeing the mountain, I went home.

ni yayna sle-ayega. I began to see the mountain.

ni yayna sle-atampka. I began to see the mountain.

This  last form is one of the few differences between Modoc and Klamath. A Modoc speaker would use -tampka to express the same idea of -yega in Klamath.
